Dr. Stolpe visited the island at the interface of Germany and Poland together with Polish Prime Minister Miller at the time. Against the background of the EU enlargement in May, the island has a symbolic character. The twin city of Guben/Gubin and the island as its cultural heart have great historical significance for both countries due to their history and location. The core content of the project is to develop the island into a place of German-Polish communication in a united Europe. This is especially in the area of this structurally weak region, an urgently needed, positively directed into the future strong sign. The border area, as a no man’s land or at best a “transit zone”, will experience a strengthening of its cultural identity. The Theaterinsel cultural park will become a central meeting place for both cities.
rten urban biotopes with a city-structuring character. The less dense areas to the north and south of Guben’s new city center can be developed as contemporary interpretations of the garden city.

Double core
Gubin’s old town ring as a negative to the medieval structure with ring-like densification around a central town garden. Its urban edges define the Gubin center.

City balconies
The complementary urban cores of Guben and Rubin meet at the opposing “city balconies” on the Neisse River. These representative, urban open spaces are a further development of the proposed Neisse terraces by Lück and Otto on the Guben side.

Flowing green corridors
The Egelneiße and Lubst rivers become renaturalized urban biotopes with a city-structuring character. The less dense areas to the north and south of the new Guben town center can be developed as contemporary interpretations of the garden city.

Theatre Island
The cultural pavilion at the southern tip of the island develops as a contemporary building sculpture from the topography of the island. It is planned as a multi-functional space that houses new media such as translation computers and the Internet.

The integration of the project into the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Fürst-Pückler-Land supports and decisively promotes the international significance of the project.

Currently, the city of Gubin is applying for funding from the European Union. The project is proposed as the Polish contribution to the International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

With the presentation the project requests a political support of the planned projects, as well as a promotion of the cooperation between the involved public authorities.
