EXHIBITION OPENING

“TREFFPUNKT BAUWENDE – BLUE-GREEN CONSTRUCTION” On Monday 8 June, the exhibition “Treffpunkt Bauwende – Blue-Green Building” by the Bundesstiftung Bauakademie opened at Schinkelplatz in the heart of Berlin. It demonstrates how the construction transition can take shape: through climate-adapted building, blue-green infrastructure and a conscious approach to rainwater, urban greenery and open spaces. Among the 15 projects on display around the Red Hall, our office is represented with two contributions: the pilot project on cross-property rainwater management at Landsberger Allee 52 and the feasibility study for the Bauakademie building, which we produced in collaboration with oikotec Ingenieur*innen. As part of the accompanying programme of events, Izabela Malachowska-Coqui will lead the session ‘Cross-property rainwater management’ on 1 October 2026.

VISITING LECTURERSHIP AT THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS IN WARSAW

Izabela Malachowska-Coqui is taking up a visiting lectureship at the Faculty of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The seminar forms part of the ‘Research Platforms’ within the Master’s programme in Design and Research. Under the theme of the resilient city, students are developing design solutions for outdoor spaces that support the adaptation of cities to climate change.  Particular focus is placed on the needs of vulnerable groups such as older people, children and people with reduced mobility. The designs aim to improve thermal comfort, safety and accessibility in urban spaces – for example, through low-tech products or temporary measures for water retention, combating heat islands or reducing flood risks.

SPRING IS PLANTING TIME

The Salvator School sports hall is getting new plants In the ‘Tegeler Fließ’ landscape conservation area, and on the edge of the nature reserve of the same name – both part of the ‘Tegeler Fließtal’ Natura 2000 site – native tree species such as field maple (Acer campestre) and black alder (Alnus glutinosa) may now be planted, as they belong to the protected communities found here. The area is characterized by its near-natural river meanders, lowland moorland meadows and an aquatic ecosystem for rare and endangered species, such as beavers, otters, kingfishers, marsh harriers, corncrakes, common spadefoot toads, moor frogs and bog bean.

CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE ADAPTATION

With a focus on heat and drought At the symposium on climate adaptation by the AWO (Workers’ Welfare Association), Izabela Malachowska-Coqui presented our two climate adaptation concepts for the AWO in Wittstock/Dosse and Prenzlau in a keynote speech on climate-sensitive planning for vulnerable groups. In the second part of the symposium, which dealt with participation processes, she also conducted a workshop. In this workshop, participants worked together on the question of how problems relating to heat and heat protection in facilities can be identified and named.

SEVEN YEARS LATER

Campus Rahn School Leipzig We visited our 2018 completed project for the outdoor facilities at the Rahn School campus in Leipzig. According to our plans, the outdoor space is divided into three recreation areas: the entrance courtyard, a running track area and the schoolyard. In addition, the school grounds have been given a planted front garden area with hedges and a strip of trees as a border.

SYMPOSIUM BEAUTIFUL TRANSFORMATION

Aesthetics and design of climate-friendly building culture Last year, Joerg Th. Coqui gave a lecture on new aesthetics in landscape architecture at the Grassi Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig. In Forum 1, entitled ‘Beautiful Green and Blue – On the Aesthetics of Climate-Resilient Urban Landscapes,’ he spoke about the interplay between aesthetics and climate protection, using the example of our project of the Humboldt University of Berlin’s Institute of Physics, which got awarded at the 2025 German Landscape Architecture Prize.

STRATEGY WORKSHOP FOR AWO BRANDENBURG

Climate adaptation – raising awareness, mobilising action, implementation At this workshop we developed strategies together with the managers of the various AWO facilities with the aim of better adapting the various outdoor facilities to heat, drought and heavy rainfall. Three groups worked on proposals for the key topics of awareness raising, process structure and financing. The workshop identified important next steps for making outdoor facilities climate-resilient.

TOPPING-OUT CEREMONY AT THE SALVATOR SCHOOL

Reason to celebrate! At the end of last year, we celebrated the topping-out ceremony at the Salvator Catholic School in Berlin-Reinickendorf, where a new sports hall and canteen are being built for the school. In this project, which is being carried out in cooperation with Krieger + Mielke Architects, we are not only planning the outdoor facilities, but also providing ecological monitoring of construction work.
